The North Star Reports: Global Citizenship and Digital Literacy http://NorthStarReports.org accepts submissions from undergraduate students world wide, as well as qualified high school and middle school students. We publish brief articles, 1-2 pages double spaced, regarding global and/or historical connections we share — pieces we publish include scholarly travel reports, reviews, and think pieces. We consider our publication to be a form of scholarly journalism — we are non-partisan, and non-commercial. We ask that you submit photos you own along with your submissions. We do not publish research papers from classes, but welcome condensed submissions based upon research projects. Teachers, please email with proposals to collaborate — it is important that large volume submissions from your classes do not occur before we are able to discuss a mechanism that is logistically feasible. Articles from The North Star Reports are edited by undergraduate student editors who are supervised by professors, and are used by undergraduate and K-12 classes as a part of an online learning community. Before you submit: Please read The North Star Reports published articles. Hundreds of undergraduate, high school, and middle school students are using these pieces for their classes. By participating, you will be providing an invaluable, free service to others. These reports are open-access and available to anyone with a connection to the internet. The purpose of The North Star Reports is to share our common interest in global and historical connections. We include a wide variety of issues and style: from thoughtful travel journalism, to interviews, to photo-essays. While a core of our offerings are from students studying abroad (international students to the US, US student traveling globally), we also invite articles reflecting student’s scholarly interests in the world. This may include: reflective pieces on global impact on one’s hometown or family, reviews of globally themed documentaries, films, music, and books, interviews, photo-essays, brief documentaries, and so on.
These pieces may be as brief as one long paragraph, and no longer than 2-3 pages (double spaced). We ask that you send along at least one or more photographs that you own (i.e., not taken from other sources) with each piece. It is important that the photos not include easily identifiable individuals –we are global and open-access, it is important that we protect the privacy of others. Please include a suggested title for your piece. At the bottom of the piece please include your full name, contact information (this will not be shared with anyone outside of the editorial team), your school, major/minor, and year of graduation. Submissions should be e- mailed to Professor Liang as MS Word files. Photos should be sent as separate JPG files. You may watermark the photos; otherwise we will use NSR’s default watermark. All of our authors own the copyright to their work – words and illustrations.

The North Star Reports: Global Citizenship and Digital Literacy (http://NorthStarReports.org) is a student edited and student authored open access publication centered around the themes of global and historical connections. Our abiding philosophy is that those of us who are fortunate enough to receive an education and to travel our planet are ethically bound to share our knowledge with those who cannot afford to do so. Therefore, creating virtual and actual communities of learning between college and K-12 classes are integral to our mission. In five semesters we have published 200 articles covering all habitable continents and a variety of topics ranging from history and politics, food and popular culture, to global inequities to complex identities. These articles are read by K-12 and college students. Our student editors and writers come from all parts of the campus, from Nursing to Biology, Physical Therapy to Business, and remarkably, many of our student editors and writers have long graduated from college. We also have writers and editors from other colleges and universities. In addition to our main site, we also curate a Facebook page dedicated to annotated news articles selected by our student editors (http://www.facebook.com/NorthStarReports). This is done by an all volunteer staff. We have a frugal cash budget, and we donate much of our time and talent to this project.
