Hello, my name is Rachel Weyenberg. I am a sophomore at the College of St. Scholastica and currently pursing a major in nursing. I chose to become a part of NSR because by being in Professor Liang’s class, I’ve realized that our generation is moving much faster than previous generations. We sometimes get so caught up in our personal lives that we forget to slow down and really think about our experiences and actions not only affect us, but also others around us.
During my junior and senior year of high school I had the opportunity to travel to Little Haiti. Going on a mission trip was really eye opening for me. I learned to be appreciative for the smaller things in life, and was exposed to new things I had never seen or heard before. I realized that it doesn’t require a long trip away from home to be helpful to those around you. I hope to share this power of service and my experiences through NSR. I also hope to learn from others by reading about their experiences.

The North Star Reports: Global Citizenship and Digital Literacy (http://NorthStarReports.org) is a student edited and student authored open access publication centered around the themes of global and historical connections. Our abiding philosophy is that those of us who are fortunate enough to receive an education and to travel our planet are ethically bound to share our knowledge with those who cannot afford to do so. Therefore, creating virtual and actual communities of learning between college and K-12 classes are integral to our mission. In five semesters we have published 200 articles covering all habitable continents and a variety of topics ranging from history and politics, food and popular culture, to global inequities to complex identities. These articles are read by K-12 and college students. Our student editors and writers come from all parts of the campus, from Nursing to Biology, Physical Therapy to Business, and remarkably, many of our student editors and writers have long graduated from college. We also have writers and editors from other colleges and universities. In addition to our main site, we also curate a Facebook page dedicated to annotated news articles selected by our student editors (http://www.facebook.com/NorthStarReports). This is done by an all volunteer staff. We have a frugal cash budget, and we donate much of our time and talent to this project. We are sponsored by St. Scholastica’s Department of History and Politics and by the scholarly Middle Ground Journal: World History and Global Studies (http://theMiddleGroundJournal.org).

Hello, my name is Jena O’Byrne I am from Stewartville, MN. I am a student at the College of St. Scholastica and will be graduating in 2019. I have always dreamed of being a Nurse, following in my mother’s footsteps. Along with pursuing Nursing at CSS I am on the softball team. I love that at CSS I am able to get an education and play the sport that I love.

Growing up in a close knit family has shaped who I am. Spending each summer traveling the country with my family fed into my love for history. Professor Liang’s World History Class changed the way I view history. I now am able to see how history directly impacts us all, rather than just reading about events. This introductory course was the reason why I chose to be apart of NSR. I am honored to be considered apart of this group and continue to look forward to reading what others’ write about. I also am excited to share my own thoughts on various topics circulating in the news.

Hello everyone! My name is Sarah Burton. I grew up in Colfax, Wisconsin, which is a small town outside of Eau Claire. I am a junior at the College of St. Scholastica and am currently in the nursing program. While I am not busy studying, I try to spend as much time outside as I possibly can. I love to hike, swim, run, walk, kayak, rollerblade, camp, etc. If the weather is not pleasant I enjoy reading novels, painting, playing piano, and watching films.

This will be my first year with The North Star Reports and I am excited to be a part of something that is growing and being used by many students. I enjoy how a lot of the articles get comments that continue discussion and bring up unique ideas about what the articles involve. I am happy to be able to contribute to this great resource.

Hello, my name is Nancy Thao. I am a senior at the College of St. Scholastica who will be graduating in spring 2017. I am majoring in Health Information Management with a minor in Computer Information Systems. I was born in California, but raised up and currently living in St. Paul, MN.

I am very passionate in learning about other cultures and traditions. I find it a valuable experience to be able to open up and engage with others respectfully. My dream of traveling the world is still far from sight, but I will take this chance to immerse myself in my own community. With this said, I would like to share a quote that popped up in my head while walking to school on a rainy day, “The images reflected in a puddle of water is a world we’ll never get to see without looking down.” Sometimes what we are looking for is already there without looking far. That is why I am very grateful for the opportunity to become an editor for the North Star Reports. I think this will be a great chance for me to not only grow as an individual but to also learn and share parts of my heritage and experiences with others.

Jonia Bio NSR

Hello, my name is Jonia Gordon. I am a recent graduate of the College of St. Scholastica with a major in Global, Cultural, and Language Studies (GCL). I was born and raised in Red Cliff, WI and that resulted in attending schooling with a rather small group of people. I attended K12 schooling, with a class size of 27, most of whom I was related to in some way. After moving forward, with attending college and studying abroad, I have been able to reflect about my experience and how it has influenced me as a person.

In particular, I feel that it played a role in my rather quiet and socially anxious nature because there lacked a need to introduce myself to people unless I wandered out of the area or new people ventured in. I have fond memories of my daily life in what I often refer to as ‘Home’; however, I’ve found that as I went on my own, it’s the people that I care about who define what (rather, who?) my home is. From a young age, I have dreamt about traveling, learning about more diverse cultures, and being able to have buckets of conversations with others. To be and live in a world that could shock, thrill, and comfort me all at once.

I believe that my interest in reading and contributing to the North Star Reports stems directly from these desires. It’s one way of getting to experience the world and its’ peoples from behind a computer, smart-phone, whatever suits the individual. The North Star Reports has provided me a glimpse into how people think, see what people saw, and place myself—if only briefly and within my imagination—into another person’s memories. I’m grateful and extremely pleased that this publication is accessible for myself, and others, to read as they wish.

I look forward to continuing with the North Star Reports as a reader and contributor; it has helped me to continue growing as a person, as well as delve into learning about myself.
