This past May, my family and I traveled the Mediterranean on a cruise for three weeks. We explored six countries, including Greece, Montenegro, Spain, Gibraltar, Italy, and France. We would hop off the ship and find ourselves immersed in a completely different culture, language, and place than we were the previous day. Through exploring so many cities and cultures in just three weeks, I started to notice the differences amongst multiple countries and compare them to American culture.

What I seemed to pick up and make note of was the language being spoken. My family and I could be eating lunch at a small café in Montenegro, and the waiters would be speaking English. It was so surprising that no matter where we were, no matter how big or small the city was, everyone spoke some English. I was never handed a menu that didn’t have English translations under the nation’s official language. Through my whole three-week vacation, I never encountered a time when I couldn’t see or hear English. Sometimes, I didn’t even feel like I was out of the US because English seemed to be everywhere I looked.

I especially noticed that English seemed to be the common language for tourists in Greece. The Greek language has few characters that resemble letters found in English or European languages. Therefore, all road signs and monument markings were translated to English. What was shocking is that they weren’t translated to Italian or another language within close proximity to Greece. It was all in English.

English is also commonly spoken in Greece. While walking down the street in Athens, I heard a Chinese woman ask a local for directions in English. This really opened my eyes and allowed me to see how many people in this world are bilingual or even greater. Tour guides we had in the Vatican spoke a minimum of three languages, and locals would switch from speaking Italian to English mid sentence. While in Europe, I felt as if my three years of high school Spanish were simply inadequate and pretty much embarrassing. Looking at most countries in the world, they are taught multiple languages from a young age, while in America, the majority of us just know a few Spanish, French, or German words from high school classes. The rest of the world seems to know that Americans can’t speak many other languages so we were often talked about right in front of our faces without having a clue what was said. In one case, we were standing in an elevator and two German women were snickering and talking about mine and my sister’s outfit. The only way we could tell they were talking about us was because they were foreword enough to point at us and stare while laughing. It was really embarrassing that we had no idea what they were saying and that they could talk freely about us while we didn’t have a clue.

In some ways, I felt inferior on my vacation to Europe. I couldn’t understand what people were saying as they walked by, and the only thing I could say is “hello” or “thank you” in the local language. It was strange to me that even though I was a tourist coming to their homeland to experience their culture and language, locals had to conform to the English language and American culture. I felt that if I could speak the local language, I would be respected. I believe that locals would think much more highly of tourists if they took the time to learn about the local culture instead of them having to change to fit the lifestyle of tourists.

I grew up in Side Lake, Minnesota, a very small community on a chain of lakes, up on the Iron Range of northern Minnesota. Some of my earliest memories are spending time at my cabin in Ontario, hunting with my dad, and fishing with family. I’ve always enjoyed being outside, and honestly, there isn’t much else to do in northern Minnesota except spend time outdoors. During the long Minnesota winters, my family goes snowmobiling, ice fishing, and downhill skiing.

Since I was 3 years old, I have had a love for skiing, and I’ve spent every winter downhill skiing ever since. I loved it so much when I was younger that I needed a leash attached to my jacket because I would ski down the hill too fast. My love for skiing continued to grow as I got older, and when I turned 15, my passion for helping others and skiing met. I decided to become a volunteer ski patrol at Giants Ridge Ski Resort in Biwabik, Minnesota. A ski patrol is a first responder on skis that helps injured skiers and snowboarders. The training consisted of skills ranging from how to care for a broken arm to how to treat frostbite. Ultimately, the training lasted about a year and a half.

I fell in love with being a ski patrol, so I began thinking about doing something similar for my career. I thought about nursing, and I realized it would be a great fit for me. In the fall of 2015, I was accepted into the nursing program at St. Scholastica. Although it has only been one semester of nursing classes, it has been a great learning experience in which I can apply my knowledge of being a ski patrol to material we have learned in class. I will be a junior in the fall of 2016, and I am expected to graduate with a biology minor in the spring of 2018.

Another quality that makes me who I am is my love for travel. My mom was a travel agent when she was younger, so she instilled a love of travel in me at a very young age. From Paris to Hawaii to Iceland, my family has been all over to soak up the local culture and learn from our experiences. Something I love about travelling is how it familiarizes you with the world. Because I have been lucky enough to travel, I am more aware of global issues, cultures, and norms around the world. It is possible to read about the cultures of some countries, but until you are immersed in that lifestyle, it is hard to get a grasp of why people are the way they are.

One of the main reasons I am a writer for the North Star Reports is because I want to share my views with the world. Whether those views come from me travelling to the Mediterranean or spending the summer at home on the Iron Range, they are important to help people understand the variation of cultures found around the world. As I wrote in my previous article, the economy of the Iron Range revolves around the mines. People who are not from the Iron Range do not usually understand this concept, so I want to write about the economic issues that cannot be swept under the rug. This is just one example of how I can share my experiences and observations of the world with others. The North Star Reports has given me the opportunity to share different ideas and views, both of which I am excited to share in the future.

“Cabin country” is what people from the Twin Cities refer to the area north of Duluth as. However, this isn’t cabin country to me. It’s where I was born and raised. The Iron Range is a streak of iron ore-rich land that stretches 110 miles from Grand Rapids to Ely. More than twenty small towns with an average population of 3,000 people each are strung along the line of ore that is mined for steel. The red dirt and scarred land from more than 100 years of open-pit ore mining are telltale signs you are on the Iron Range.

Iron ore, which is the raw material for steel, was discovered on the Iron Range in the late 1800’s. The area was first mined underground, but then transitioned to open-pit mining in the early 1900’s. Years of open pit mining have created towering piles of rejected iron ore and huge “pits” that are now filled with water.

The Iron Range’s mining industry has always been globally connected. The area was the main producer of ore that was shipped to steel mills throughout both world wars. Between 1941 and 1945, the Iron Range produced 338 million tons of ore, which accounted for 90% of the nation’s output. The area grew to its fullest capacity during the war, but when it ended, the region started its slow decline. The high grade iron ore supply was finally depleting after nearly 100 years of steady mining, so the mines switched to mining a lower grade ore called taconite. With only 6 remaining mines on the Range today, the area still produces 50% of the nation’s ore. However, the mining industry is vulnerable to national and global economic cycles.

National and global demands for iron ore cause cycles of boom and bust on the Iron Range. Because the mining industry dominates the local economy, every business is affected by the mines highs and lows. If production in the mines is increased, the whole economy receives a boost and businesses flourish. However, if the mines lay off their workers, local grocery stores, shops, and businesses feel the effects as well. Because the mines have been in a steady decline for over 15 years, downtown businesses have closed leaving the main streets of towns nearly empty.

With few opportunities for jobs that aren’t involved with the mining industry, many people move to larger cities in search of more opportunities. Since 1982, the population has declined by nearly 20,000 people. Empty houses, streets, and storefronts make some towns feel abandoned. There are also more young people moving away from the Iron Range, which has caused class sizes at local schools to decline by 60%.

I graduated from Chisholm High School in 2014 with a class of 38 people. I knew everyone’s middle name, their dog’s name, and what their hobbies were. Although we were a very small school, it was fun to know everyone as well as I did. The teachers I had throughout high school were some of the same ones that taught my parents. Even while I was in class, there was no forgetting what the local industry was. Every Wednesday at 11:30, our 100-year-old school would rumble and shake from the aftershocks of the nearby mine’s blasting the ground to expose more iron ore.

Even though the Iron Range is in a state of steady economic and population decline, it was a great place to grow up. It has a small town feel where everyone knows your last name or who your grandparents are. It’s a land full of hundreds of lakes and acres of untouched forests that comes to life in the summer with tourists and cabin-goers. The Iron Range is home to many diverse people, but they all share a connection to the region’s mining culture.
